[Black Star - Solo Actual Play] Star Wars: Operation Black Star Ep.3

Episode 3 - Scene 1: "Black Star"

Altered Scene? = 6 vs chaos factor 4 - No.

Kael: "What's Operation Black Star?"

Yuvig: "That is the project you are targeting. The only intel we have gathered, is that it is a secret weapon of some kind, with devastating power. The Alliance wants you to steal any data relating to the project, and destroy any prototypes related to it. Want some advice? Pick another job. This is a suicide mission human."

Kael: "Shara said you could get some… hardware for me?"

Yuvig: "Sure, I'll send the co-ordinates to your datapad. It's a dead drop, so no face to face exchange. Small, compact, discrete. They will pack enough punch to do some serious damage inside a building though. My advice, get well out of there before detonating."

Kael: "Any idea's how I can actually get in there?"

Does he have any ideas for Kael? (likely) = 17 yes.

Meanings? = 29, 24 Delay Emotion - perhaps a bar where officers drink?

Meanings 2? = 89, 10 Suppress Burden - stopping a Cargo or supply transport?

Yuvig: "It won't be easy. Cargo transports drop off supplies pretty regularily, you could maybe hijack one of them and drive in, or try stash yourself and hide on one. They will check what goes in an out. If you're really crazy, there's a Cantina where Imperial's tend to hang out off duty. You could try getting one drunk enough to steal his uniform, and try walk right in. No way in is easy. That's gonna be up to you friend."

Kael: "Thanks for the help."

Yuvig: "Say, what do you think is my best move here? I'm trying to win some money off the Nikto."

Yuvig points at the Dejarik board.

Kael: "Tater?"

Tater analyses the game board.

Tater - Intellect Roll = 2d6 (+1bd) +3 = 7 fail

Tater: "Apologies Master Yuvig, I'm afraid the Nikto has you beat, there is no winning move you can make."

Yuvig: "Ah Bantha Poodoo. Well, see you around."

Kael exits the booth, and makes to exit the cantina.

Does it look like anyone get's up to follow them? (50/50) = 75 no.

Kael and Tater make their way to the dead drop co-ordinates.

As they get close Kael, will make an Instinct roll to see if his Intuition trait senses any danger, ambush or trap.

Kael - Instinct Roll = 2d6(+1bd)+3 = 8 fail.

Kael doesn't sense any danger, trap or ambush.

Is there a trap or ambush waiting? (50/50) = 2 exceptional yes.

Kael and Tater step into an alleyway, where the co-ordiantes given by Yuvig indicate. As they move to a small container at the centre of the alley, several figures appear blocking the other side. Kael looks back they way they came, several figures appear to block that exit too. It's a trap!

Are they all Nikto? (likely) = 46 yes.

Has Vexis hired them? (very likely) = 31 yes

How many are there on each side? 2d6 = 4 on each side.

At each end of the alleyway 4 Nikto thugs, armed with blaster pistols stand menacingly. Kael recognises one of them as the one from the Cantina.

*Speaking Basic*

Kael: "Don't suppose you guys are here to help?"

Nikto Thug: "Vexis sends his regards, human."

The thugs all raise their weapons and point them at Kael.

END SCENE.

Episode 3 - Scene 2: "Shootout"

COMBAT

Kael's Movement Rd. 1 = 7 spaces. (Movement speed is determined at the top of a PC's turn by rolling a number of d6 equal to the PC's Speed ability score+3, it is random each round to simulate the unpredictability of combat.)

Kael moves into cover hiding behind an electrical conduit next to the side of a building behind him.

Kael: "Tater, hide!"

Kael opens fire at the group of thugs to his right with his blaster pistol.

Kael Blasting Roll = 2d6+3 = 11 success (with one 6)

Kael drops two of the thugs to the right with precise shooting. The two remaining thugs on the right scatter, running in opposite directions for cover as blaster bolts whizz past their heads. They focus their fire on Kael.

Group Attack 2 - Kael Defence Roll = 2d6(+1bd for Kael being in cover)+3 (speed is used for defence in combat) = 9 success.

The thugs shots blast the side of the building and the ground near Kael's feet, missing him. Tater raises his arms and runs for cover trying to get out of sight.

Tater's Movement Rd.1 = 1d6+3 = 4 spaces.

Tater: "Oh my!"

The thugs on the left of the alley scatter into two pairs, running for cover and trying to get a line of site on Kael. Two of them look to try flank behind the building Kael is using for cover. Kael continues firing his blaster down the alley to his right.

Kael's Blasting Roll = 2d6(+1pd as target in cover)+3 = 7 fail

The two thugs on the right return fire, continuing to concentrate their fire at Kael.

Group Attack 2 - Kael Defence Roll = 2d6(+1bd for Kael being in cover)+3 = 14

Kael is too well covered and neither of the thugs can land a shot. One of the pairs from the left moves into sight, but unable to find decent cover, they begin firing as soon as they see Kael.

Group Attack 2 - Kael Defence Roll = 2d6(+1bd)+3 = 12 success.

There panicked shots hit wide as they move, not able to hit their mark.

Tater's Movement Rd. 2 = 1d6+3 = 5 spaces

Tater get's behind a stack of boxes next to another building, keeping out of the way. The thugs flanking move into a narrow gap behind the building Kael is using for cover, shimmying down the back of the building whilst Kael is occupied. Suddenly one of them comes into view behind Kael, exposing him from his cover and opens fire.

Group Attack 1 - Kael Defence Roll = 2d6(+1bd)+3= 14 success.

The thugs aim is terrible, and misses Kael, shots hitting the ground next to his feet. Kael knows he is in trouble, he's surrounded and he's never been great at fighting close range. With two thugs stood right behind him, leaving him exposed, Kael must act fast.

Do the thugs behind look to be carrying any explosives, stun grenades that type of thing? (likely) = 24 yes

Would a "Security Kit" contain some kind of electrical overload device? (Very Likely) = 68 yes

Kael's Movement Rd.3 = 3d6+3 = 14 spaces

I'm going to attempt something daring. Kael is going to charge at the two behind him, try to use his reflexes and agility to move in, attach an overload kit to the grenade on the thug's belt, then move away. This is going to incur a penalty die as it is a tricky and risky manoeuvre. I think he can use his Speed stat for this, as it involves agility and hand-eye coordination.

Kael Speed Roll = 2d6(+1pd) +3 = 7 fail - I'm going to spend a point of Resolve to turn the failure into a costly success. Resolve can be spent to either re-roll a failed ability roll, or automatically succeed but at a cost.

Costly Success - Kael spends 1 Resolve to succeed, however due to Kael's Outlaw trait, when spending resolve to turn a fail into a costly success on a Speed Roll, Kael suffers no consequence!

Grenades affect everything within 15ft. This will kill both thugs that had flanked him.

Kael know's that he is in a dire situation, surrounded and outgunned. He thinks fast, spotting the thermal detonator strapped to the belt of the thug behind him. Kiran dips his hand into his security kit on his belt pulling out a small electrical overload device, designed to overload security systems and electronics with a burst of electrical energy.

Kael Vos - Made with Hero Forge

Kael runs at the thug, who tries to hit Kael with the butt of his blaster. Kael dodges the blow and deftly attaches the overload device to the detonator on the thugs belt. The device beeps and Kael sprints away, then BOOM the thermal detonator explodes. The blast knocks Kael to the ground. He turns to see a cloud of black smoke and flames where the two thugs were stood just seconds ago. Kael scrambles back behind cover.

One of the thugs shouts:

Thug: "Move in on him! Let's get him!"

Both of the thugs to the right start to advance trying to overwhelm Kael as he scrambles back behind cover. They continue their rain of blaster fire.

Group Attack 2 - Kael Defence Roll = 2d6(+1bd)+3 = 13 success

The blaster bolts miss as Kael makes it back behind his cover in time. Tater continues to hide out of sight.

The pair on the left also advance whilst firing. They are closing in, the situation is becoming desparate.

Group Attack 2 - Kael Defence Roll = 2d6(+1bd)+3 = 9 success.

Blaster fire rains down on Kaels cover, narrowly missing him. He need's to finish this and quickly.

Kael Blasting Roll = 2d6+3 = 7 fail

I'm going to spend a resolve to re-roll.

-1 Resolve for re-roll = 10 (with one 6) success.

Kael down to 5 resolve.

Kael pops back out of cover and drops the two closest thugs with his blaster. Only 2 remain.

Seeing how Kael has gunned so many down, do the last 2 panic and flee? (50/50) = 98 exceptional no.

Thug: "You bastard, we're gonna gut you when we get hold of you!"

One moves to cover behind the building Kael is using for cover, the other moves to cover behind some crates next to the adjacent building. They send a hail of blaster bolts Kael's way.

Group Attack 2 - Kael Defence Roll = 2d6(+1bd)+3 = 13 success.

The bolts burn against the side of the building and the ground around Kael, as they fail to hit him again.

I'll skip Tater's go unless there is something useful he can do going forwards. I'll run through the dice rolls until someone lands a hit as there's little for Kael to do but trade shots here.

Kael Blasting Roll = 2d6 (+1pd) +3 = 8 fail

Group Attack 2 - Kael Defence Roll = 2d6(+1bd)+3 = 15 success

Kael Blasting Roll = 2d6 (+1pd) +3 = 9 success

Group Attack 2 - Kael Defence Roll = 2d6(+2bd)+3 = 13 success

Kael's Movement - 3d6+3 = 14 spaces

Kael Blasting Roll = 2d6+3 = 12 success

After exchanging a volley of blaster shots, Kael manages to hit the one hiding behind the crates, leaving one lone thug. Kael runs out from behind his cover narrowly avoiding incoming fire then drops the final thug with a well placed shot from his blaster as he slides across the sandy ground, skidding to a stop. Kael pants, regaining his breath as calmness falls back onto the alleyway.

Kael: "Tater… You can… come out now…"

Tater emerges from behind one of the buildings.

Tater: "Oh my. Master, this is quite the mess."

Kael: "Grab the explosives from the dead dropcrate will you. I need to catch my breath. Then let's get out of here before any more show up."

END SCENE.

Scarlet Heroes - A Solo Scribe's Review

Scarlet Heroes - Review T his post is going t o be a review of my experiences with the Scarlet Heroes TTRPG written by Kevin Crawford, and published by Sine Nomine Publishing. The aim of the review is to briefly overview the system and what I like and don't like about it, from the point of view specifically as a solo roleplayer. So let's begin by talking a little about the system. The System The system is a classic OSR Sword and Sorcery style game, drawing heavily on the mechanics and themes of old school D&D and similar titles that use hit dice, classes, hit rolls on 1d20 etc. The game actually incorporates the "Red Tide" setting from Labyrinth Lord so is fully compatible with existing material for that game. Monsters, spells and other mechanics from Labyrinth Lord and other OSR titles that meet the aforementioned criteria, can be implemented with little to no conversion. The philosophy of the game is designed around having a single Player Character (PC) and a si...

[Black Star - Solo Actual Play] Star Wars: Operation Black Star Ep.1

Introduction A long time ago in a glaxy far, far away... Welcome to the first episode of my Actual Play mini-campaign of Black Star from LakeSide Games. For those not familiar, it's a rules-light, Star Wars with the serial numbers filed off, table top roleplaying game. It's not specifically designed for solo play, and yet the simplicity and design choices mean that it lends itself very well to solo gaming. It also makes playing a game in the Star Wars universe absolutely effortless, all you need do is rename a few things and there you have it. I'm also using the fantastic Mythic GME 2e, to drive the story forwards. I'll preface this by saying this Actual Play is my first time playing with this system, so I will make mistakes. It's also my first attempt at writing my game into a tangible, readable format so again, I'm probably going to make mistakes. But let's not wast anymore time and jump into the action... Episode 1 - Scene 1: "A Little Busy..." ...

[Black Star - Solo Actual Play] Star Wars: Operation Black Star Ep.2

Episode 2 - Scene 1: "Hive of Scum and Villainy"   Altered Scene? = 5 vs Chaos factor 6, yes The expected scene was to arrive in the system, and speak to Shara, then head to the planet. I'm going to interpret the altered scene as another person, other than Shara also contacting Kael prior to arriving on the planet. Is it Kael's rival? (very likely) = 36 yes The Echo Voyager drops out of hyperspace as the blur of stars around them reform into single points of light. Hanging in front of their view, the dusty backwater planet, Tatooine is visible. Kael: "Tater, send a signal to Shara. Let her know we've arrived." Tater: "Signal sent." A few moments later the comm link on the control panel of the Voyager blinks. Kael hits the button and a hologram image of a female human, with short dark hair and piercing eyes appears in front of them. Shara: "Good, you made it in one piece." Kael: "As always! Now, what's this job you mentioned w...
