[Black Star - Solo Actual Play] Star Wars: Operation Black Star Ep.4

Episode 4 - Scene 1 "Terribly Sorry Officer"

Altered Scene? = 8 no

Because of Kaels heroic and daring move in line with his characters abilities in the last episode, I'm going to award him 1 resolve back, as suggested in the games rules.

I want Kael to try obtain an Imperial Officer's uniform and sneak into the base that way. Based on the information provided by Yuvig, there is a Cantina frequented by Imperial's, this seems like a good place to start.

Can Kael find an illicit or black market merchant that could sell him some kind of drug or poison? (likely) = 16 yes.

Kael and Tater gather the explosives left by Yuvig's contacts and head back into the main city. Kael decides to do a bit of shopping, with a plan in mind involving the Cantina Yuvig mentioned. Kael finds a black market dealer, selling drugs and poisons. Kael purchases a poison that will make someone violently ill if consumed. After asking around, it's not too difficult to find the Cantina Yuvig had indicated. As they make their way, Kael explains his plan to Tater.

After following the directions given by a passer by and navigating the dusty streets of Mos Eisley, Kael and Tater approach and enter the cantina, supposedly frequented by Imperial's. As they enter, Kael can see that behind the bar stands a male Duros.

Is the Cantina busy? (50/50) = 84 no.

Is there an Imperial Officer here in Uniform? (50/50) = 11 exceptional yes.

The cantina is relatively empty, but stood alone at the bar is an Imperial Officer, male, with a drink in his hand. He looks to be around 30-35 years old, thin build with short dark hair visible under his grey officers hat.

Kael: "Perfect. Okay Tater, you know the plan. Let's do this."

Tater: "On your command, Master."

They approach the bar.

Duros Bartender personality trait (Universal NPC Emulator) = Knowledgable

Bartender: "Good afternoon friend. What can I get for you today? We've got a fine selection of drinks on offer. The Andoan White is an especially fine vintage, or we have a great bottle of Merezane Gold, if you're looking for something with a bit more of a kick."

Kael: "I'll just take a Blue Milk please."

Bartender: "Coming right up, anything for your droid friend? An RQ model protocol droid if I'm not mistaken? We don't see many of his kind round here."

Kael: "He's fine, thanks."

The bartender serves Kael his glass of Blue Milk, and Kael glances at the Officer out the corner of his eye. It looks like the officer is about to move away from the bar.

Speaking in a hushed tone.

Kael: "Ok Tater, time to execute the plan. Let's go."

The Imperial Officer moves away from the bar to go sit down, so Tater heads towards him and rather heavily bumps into the Officer, spilling most of his drink.

Officer: "Blasted droid! Who in the name of the Emperor, does this blasted droid belong to?!"

The man looks visibly angry, face red as he glares around the room waiting for someone to speak up.

Kael swoops over.

Kael: "I'm terribly sorry officer! This old rust bucket's circuits are on the way out, damned thing keeps wondering off aimlessly. Please, let me buy you another drink?"

Kael Diplomacy Roll = 2d6+2 = 11 success.

Officer: "You most certainly will be doing, you're lucky I don't have you arrested and that thing thrown into the scrap. I'll take glass of the Andoan White, quickly now."

Kael: "Coming right up, you sit yourself down sir."

The Officer heads to a booth to sit down. Kael goes to the bar and orders the drink the Officer asked for. The Duros pours the drink and places it on the bar. The Duros turns his back to get something else. Using his slight of hand, Kael pulls out the small vial of the poison and attempts to slip it in the drink unnoticed.

Kael's Thief trait gives him +1bd to Speed rolls to delicate tasks such as palming items, picking pockets etc.

Kael Speed Roll = 2d6(+1bd) +3 = 15 success.

Kael slips the poison in totally unnoticed. He carries the drink over to the Officer and places it on the table in front of him.

Officer: "Now, get out of my sight before I have that droid sent for scrap, and you sent to an Imperial work camp."

Kael bows his head as he backs away.

Kael: "Apologies again officer."

Kael and Tater move to a booth at the other side of the Cantina, ensuring to keep the Officer in sight. After a couple of minutes of watching, the Officer gets up and hurriedly rushes to the restroom.

Kael quickly gets up and follows.

Does the restroom have cubicles? (nearly certain) = 12 exceptional yes.

The restroom is a line of several cubicles, all the various species that inhabit this world have different requirements for a restroom, so large and plentiful cubicles accomodate that.

Kael Speed Roll = 2d6+3 = 14 success

Kael quickly rushes in behind the Officer and manages to jam his foot in the cubicle door as the Officer leaves it to shut behind him, in a hurry without paying much attention to what's going on, he immediately starts to vomit into the toilet.

Kael Brawling Roll (+1bd as Kael has 'The Drop' on the Officer) = 2d6(+1bd)+1 = 11 success.

As the Officer looks to be finishing his bout of vomiting, Kael whacks him over the back of the head with the butt of his blaster pistol, hard. The Officer hits the deck and slumps over, unconscious. Kael proceeds to undress the Officer, putting on his uniform, taking his datapad, weapon, hat, everything. Kael puts his own stuff in his pack. He pulls the brim of the cap down over his face a little and exits the restroom, head down. He makes straight for the exit of the building.

END SCENE.

I think Kael's really played into his skills and character again here, so I'm going to award him another Resolve point back, bringing him back to full.

Episode 4 - Scene 2 "Hit The Road"

Altered Scene? = 5 vs Chaos factor 5 - Yes.

Initially I imagined this scene as Kael and Tater finding a way to get to the base together. However to alter the scene, I think it makes sense that Kael goes alone instead, and Tater provides support from the Echo Voyager.

Tater and Kael reconvene and head back to their ship to figure out the next steps of their plan.

Kael: "Hopefully if I can hack this datapad we can figure out where the base is. It might give us some insight on how to get there too."

Tater: "If you can breach the system, I will search the data rapidly for the information you seek, Master."

Kael Tools Roll = 2d6(+1bd as I think this qualifies for the bonus from the Thief trait, which adds +1 when circumventing locks/traps/security systems with a Tools roll) +4 = 12 success.

It's worth noting that as I'm playing a mini-campaign with a single PC, I gave Kael slightly buffed stats, allowing him to start with more points to spend, and to breach the normal starting cap of having no skill higher than a 3, which is why his Tools skill is 4.

Kael plugs his own datapad into the Officer's, and begins working on cracking the encryption to access it. Kael is a skilled technician and hacker, and has no trouble with this. This isn't his first Bantha Rodeo.

Is the Imperial Base in the Jundland Wastes? (likely) = 82 no

It's in the Dune Sea instead.

Kael: "Tater, I'm in. I'm uploading the data to you now. I need you to find the location of the base."

Tater: "Searching… It seems the base is located in a remote location in the Dune Sea. There isn't much in the surrounding area."

Kael: "Are there any kind of deliveries or transports that run from Mos Eisley we could get on board to take us there?"

Is there any such transport? (very likely) = 79 no.

Tater: "Unfortunately not. All resources are flown directly in and out of the base. We would have to approach ourselves… That is not going to be good for our cover story."

Kael: "I'll have to try rent a Landspeeder or something similar. Tater, I think it's going to be best if you stay here. You can support over the comm. I don't think an Officer turning up with a random Protocol droid at the front gates is going to look very convincing."

Tater: "My probability indicators do agree that this is the best course of action. I will remain on the Echo Voyager, and prepare to extract you if things go wrong. I must warn you Master, the probability of them not discovering that you are in fact an Imperial Officer, is rather low..."

Kael: "It's still our best chance. Relax, I'll be fine! Let's get moving then."

Kael checks his gear, restocking his security kit and putting the explosives from Yuvig, in a pouch on the Officers tool belt. He leave's his own pistol, taking the Officers instead. Kael heads out into Mos Eisley. The suns are getting lower along the horizon as the afternoon grows late and evening draws in.

Kael manages to find a place to rent a Landspeeder relatively quickly, and pays the credits to rent it for a couple of days. Kael sets out to the coordinates indicated for the base, heading out of the city and into the dusty wastes of the Dune Sea.

Is Kael attacked by Tusken Raiders along the way? (50/50) = 39

Shortly into the journey, Kael can see smoke rising from what he expects are camp fires, over on the hill to his left. A Tusken Raider camp most likely. As he continues through the dunes, suddenly he see's a red blaster bolt flash past. The Tuskens must be firing at him. He spots several crouched on a rocky outcrop to his left. He faintly hears their iconic braying sound, as they shout and wave their weapons in the air.

A Landspeeder has a Structure score of 2 so can take 2 damage before being immobilised.

Landspeeder Defence Roll = 2d6(+1bd as he is moving at speed, +1pd for Defence stat of 1 for the Landspeeder = 0bd)+3 = 12 success

A few more shots whizz past, but Kael is moving at too much speed for them to get a good aim and he is soon out of their range. Kael sighs, relieved.

Speaking over the comm,

Kael: "Tater, make sure I have all the information I need, like any access codes or whatever else readily available when I arrive."

Tater: "Confirming the data now."

After a couple of hours, Kael finally spots something in the distance. A large black shape, on the now nearly dark horizon. The Imperial base. As Kael gets closer, he can see it has towering black metallic walls, lined sparsely with vertical white lights. At the front is a large gate, big enough to fit just about any sized land vehicle through easily enough. The Imperial base.

Kael pulls up at the gate, and gets out of the speeder. There is a control panel with an intercom next to the gate. The chill of the desert night air nips at his skin as Kael approaches it and presses the comm button. A voice sounds over the intercom...

Imperial Trooper: "Good evening Officer? I'm gonna have to ask you to state your designation and purpose, this is a secure location..."

END SCENE.

Scarlet Heroes - A Solo Scribe's Review

Scarlet Heroes - Review T his post is going t o be a review of my experiences with the Scarlet Heroes TTRPG written by Kevin Crawford, and published by Sine Nomine Publishing. The aim of the review is to briefly overview the system and what I like and don't like about it, from the point of view specifically as a solo roleplayer. So let's begin by talking a little about the system. The System The system is a classic OSR Sword and Sorcery style game, drawing heavily on the mechanics and themes of old school D&D and similar titles that use hit dice, classes, hit rolls on 1d20 etc. The game actually incorporates the "Red Tide" setting from Labyrinth Lord so is fully compatible with existing material for that game. Monsters, spells and other mechanics from Labyrinth Lord and other OSR titles that meet the aforementioned criteria, can be implemented with little to no conversion. The philosophy of the game is designed around having a single Player Character (PC) and a si...

[Black Star - Solo Actual Play] Star Wars: Operation Black Star Ep.1

Introduction A long time ago in a glaxy far, far away... Welcome to the first episode of my Actual Play mini-campaign of Black Star from LakeSide Games. For those not familiar, it's a rules-light, Star Wars with the serial numbers filed off, table top roleplaying game. It's not specifically designed for solo play, and yet the simplicity and design choices mean that it lends itself very well to solo gaming. It also makes playing a game in the Star Wars universe absolutely effortless, all you need do is rename a few things and there you have it. I'm also using the fantastic Mythic GME 2e, to drive the story forwards. I'll preface this by saying this Actual Play is my first time playing with this system, so I will make mistakes. It's also my first attempt at writing my game into a tangible, readable format so again, I'm probably going to make mistakes. But let's not wast anymore time and jump into the action... Episode 1 - Scene 1: "A Little Busy..." ...

[Black Star - Solo Actual Play] Star Wars: Operation Black Star Ep.2

Episode 2 - Scene 1: "Hive of Scum and Villainy"   Altered Scene? = 5 vs Chaos factor 6, yes The expected scene was to arrive in the system, and speak to Shara, then head to the planet. I'm going to interpret the altered scene as another person, other than Shara also contacting Kael prior to arriving on the planet. Is it Kael's rival? (very likely) = 36 yes The Echo Voyager drops out of hyperspace as the blur of stars around them reform into single points of light. Hanging in front of their view, the dusty backwater planet, Tatooine is visible. Kael: "Tater, send a signal to Shara. Let her know we've arrived." Tater: "Signal sent." A few moments later the comm link on the control panel of the Voyager blinks. Kael hits the button and a hologram image of a female human, with short dark hair and piercing eyes appears in front of them. Shara: "Good, you made it in one piece." Kael: "As always! Now, what's this job you mentioned w...
